Caught Ghost Rider with GJ and TJ last night. This movie was exactly what I expected. A super hero based B-movie. This movie is a fun watch if you go in with the right expectations. There was some funny bits in the first half with Nick Cage. The parts where he starts being Elvis is awesome. Towards the second half, it starts getting more corny especially where the protagonist starts discovering his powers.
Overall I didn’t think the movie was very good but I enjoyed it.
While I was looking for movie monologues, I also came up with a list of date movies. Consider this my sentimental offering for Valentine’s. The surprising thing was how many of my favorite movies showed up on this list. No…. LOTR isn’t on this list. In no particular order what so ever.
Cinema Paradiso
High Fidelity
Good Will Hunting
Shakespeare in Love
Bull Durham
Scent of a Woman
Love Actually
A couple of days ago, I was browsing Youtube. Not looking at anything in particular when I chanced upon this monologue given by Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting (one of my favorite movies and one that I have not watched in a long time). Watching that monologue inspired me to find other great movie monologues.
My only criteria for listing them here was:
1) I’ve watched the movie
2) I found the clip on Youtube
Good Will Hunting - Robin Williams
The one that started it.
This was the other one that came to mind immediately. There is also a great Tango scene in it.
A Few Good Men - Jack Nicholson
You want the truth. You can’t handle the truth. A real classic.
Good Will Hunting - Matt Damon
A political statement about a decade ahead of it’s time. I’ve forgotten how much great dialogue was in Good Will Hunting.
Shawshank Redemption - Morgan Freeman
Short but good.
Al Pacino has so many great monologues. Here are two more good ones: City Hall, The Devil’s Advocate
The man's body of work is just frigging amazing.
The slacker’s anthem? Maybe.
This is an honorable mention because I cannot find a clip of it on Youtube. It's by Kevin Costner from Bull Durham.
Watched Pan’s Labyrinth up at the Egyptian with Mic and Jay Saturday night. Went into the movie theater with very little idea about the movie. AD had told me earlier that it was a visceral experience and I might need a drink afterwards. Jay described it as a fantasy movie while we were sitting through the previews.
It definitely falls under fantasy. All the elements of a fantasy movie was there. Reminded me of "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe". The movie juxtaposed the last days of WW2 with the fantasy elements, culminating in the final scene where the two worlds meet. The hero completes her journey by making a choice. Very much the fantasy story I have a soft spot for. I should have found it more enjoyable.
Why didn’t I absolutely like it? My threshold for suspense and gore isn’t that high. I can handle characters getting killed horribly/violently as long as it happens off screen. The implication of it makes me wince just thinking about it. If it’s going to happen on screen, I don’t need that much detail to tell me that the person is dying horribly. Screams of pain will suffice, which it did because I hid behind my hands for large parts of the movie. Even when there was no threat of that happening. I was on edge for the entire movie.
Overall I thought the movie was good. I didn’t enjoy it but it was good.
